Duty pay is calculated per hour from your report time to your release time, not from wheels-up to wheels-down. This means ground delays, boarding time, and post-flight duties all count. Your airline applies a fixed hourly rate to the total duty hours in each duty period.
Per diem is an hourly or daily allowance for every hour spent away from base, covering meals and incidentals. Overnight allowance is a separate payment for each night spent away from home base. Some airlines pay both; some combine them into a single away-from-base allowance.
Overnight allowances are usually split into a non-taxable element (approved by HMRC as a genuine expense reimbursement) and a taxable element above the approved rate. The split depends on your airline's specific rates and your tax authority's approved limits.
Holiday pay should be calculated on your average earnings, including duty pay, per diem, and allowances, not just your base salary. Many airlines still calculate holiday pay on base salary only, which may be unlawful. Check with your union if you think you're being underpaid on holiday.
