SAS cabin crew pay is not a single figure - it is a combination of components that add up differently every month depending on your hours, your layovers, and your seniority step. The multi-base structure: ARN, CPH, OSL

SAS operates cabin crew from multiple Scandinavian bases - Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), Copenhagen (CPH), and Oslo (OSL) - as well as a number of regional bases. Each base operates under its own collective agreement, negotiated with the relevant local union: Unionen and the SAS CC union in Sweden, NHO Aviation and the relevant cabin crew union in Norway, and their Danish equivalents in Denmark.

This matters for pay because the rates, currency, and in some cases the calculation method differ between bases. An ARN-based crew member is paid in SEK under Swedish terms; a CPH-based crew member in DKK under Danish terms; OSL in NOK. If you are transferred between bases or your contract changes, your pay structure may change significantly even if your role stays the same.

Base salary

Your base salary is the fixed monthly amount paid regardless of how many flights you operate. It is set by your seniority step within the applicable collective agreement. Steps typically progress annually, though some agreements include longer or shorter step intervals. The base salary is taxable income and appears on your payslip as a fixed line each month.

Base salary alone does not reflect your full earnings - for many crew it represents less than half of total monthly pay. The variable components below are where most of the variation comes from.

Duty pay per hour

On top of base salary, SAS pays an hourly duty rate for time on duty - from your report time to your release at the end of your last flight. This is sometimes called flight pay, duty hour pay, or traktamente in Swedish. The rate varies by seniority and base, and it accumulates with every hour of every duty day.

Because duty pay is calculated from report to release (not just block hours), a day with a long ground delay or positioning flight will generate more duty pay than a day with the same number of sectors but less ground time. Per diem and overnight allowance

SAS pays a per diem for time away from base, calculated in the local currency of your base (SEK, NOK, DKK, or EUR for some international contracts). The rate depends on your collective agreement and the destination - rates are typically higher for more expensive locations. An overnight supplement is usually added on top for nights spent away from home base.

Per diem is subject to a taxable/non-taxable split based on the relevant tax authority's approved subsistence rates. For Swedish-based crew, Skatteverket sets the benchmark; for Norwegian crew, Skatteetaten; for Danish crew, Skat. The principle is the same as the HMRC approach for UK-based crew - up to the approved rate is tax-free, and anything above it is taxable. If your payslip shows the full per diem as taxable, that is worth querying with payroll.

Holiday pay and how it is calculated

Holiday pay at SAS is typically calculated as a percentage of your total qualifying earnings - which usually includes base salary and duty pay, and may include some allowances depending on your agreement. Because the holiday pay base includes variable pay, months where you have worked more hours or more overnight duties can increase the holiday pay you accrue.

Errors in holiday pay are often the last thing crew notice, because holiday pay is paid out in a separate annual payment or spread across holiday months. If your duty pay was under-reported in previous months, your holiday pay base will also be understated. This is one reason why catching payslip errors early matters - it is not just the month in question. Check your payslip structure and verify that the holiday pay base on your annual statement includes all qualifying pay elements.
